This lesson was honestly the lesson I was most anticipating because I think it forms the framework essential in creating a classroom that uses technology effectively.
Growing up with the ever changing technology I began to realize that with technology comes great responsibility to maintain an image on the internet you want the world to see. I think the main idea with digital citizenship is RESPECT. If everyone remembers this one essential world the internet would be a much safer place. If we remember to respect ourselves we will refrain from posting information and pictures that might blemish who we actually are. It is extremely surprising to me that individuals are unaware of the permanence of posting anything on the internet. However, that being said whether the information posted will be permanent or not, remember to respect yourself could prevent degrading qualities being tied to your name.
Remembering to respect others is also an essential component of Digital Citizenship. Refraining from posting rude or unnecessary comments on information posted by others and refraining from posting degrading information about someone. Remembering that a computer is not a shield to hide behind and speak disrespectfully to and about other is essential.
As a teacher the dangers of technology and a lack of digital citizenship will be ever present within my classroom as well as after class and on home computers. Remembering to encourage responsible actions on the internet is essential, and therefore I will have to make sure I am always encouraging safe and respectful internet practices within my classroom. When I say it is the framework I believe it has to be integrated and implemented and students have to be reminded of the concept of digital literacy every single time they are using technology in my classroom. I believe that it is my job to help students recognize the importance of creating a responsible digital footprint in the ever increasing dangerous technical world.
My question is: because we can't control what students post at home, what would be strategies to encourage parents/guardians to encourage responsible use of technology as well??
