Literature I would use
I had the opportunity to attend a Literature Fair at the University of Lethbridge. Throughout the Literature Fair I had the privilege of attending different sessions and started to gain a sense of different books I could use in my classroom across all grades. The following is a list of books I made note of followed by a brief synopsis as well as an idea of how the book could be used in a classroom:
Session: Social Justice in Canadian YA Literature
Presenter: Leah Fowler
Contemporary Social Realism: Some Favourites
Another a Kind of Cowboy by S.Juby
The Beckoners by C. Mac
Historical Fiction: Some Favourites
The Book of Negroes L. Hill

PICTURE BOOKS
The following are a few picture books that caught my eye during the Literacy Fair:
Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle
"When Mrs. Seahorse lays her eggs, she does it on Mr. Seahorse's belly! She knows he will take good care of them. While he swims waiting for the eggs to hatch, he meets other underwater fathers caring for their babies. Now Eric Carle's heart-warming New York Times bestseller is finally available in a board book edition, complete with the clear "peek-a-boo" pages that made the original such a hit. Brimming with bright, colorful sea life, this new board book will be irresistable to young children everywhere."
Teaching Ideas: This book could be incorporated into a Father's Day project. Students would read the book and then draw or write about the important things there Dad does for them.

The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt
"Poor Duncan just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: His crayons have had enough! They quit! Beige Crayon is tired of playing second fiddle to Brown Crayon. Black wants to be used for more than just outlining. Blue needs a break from coloring all those bodies of water. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking—each believes he is the true color of the sun."
Teaching Ideas: This book could be used to teach personification as well as moods in literature.

The Quilt Makers Gift by Jeff Brumbeau
'On a high mountain, up in the clouds, there once lived a quiltmaker who made the most beautiful, magical quilts imaginable. Once each quilt was finished the quiltmaker would take the quilt down into the town and give it to someone who had need of it, to someone who was poor or homeless. Her quilts were “not for the rich.”'
Teaching Ideas: This book could be incorporated within the Social Studies curriculum, specifically the Specific Outcomes that incorporate citizenship and globalization.

The Last Polar Bear by Jean Craighead George
"Ignoring the warnings of the adult villagers, Tigluk has a close encounter with the bear, named Nanuq. Realizing he has received an important message from her, Tigluk and his grandmother work together to mend a family boat and voyage north in the Arctic Ocean. After paddling for days, they find an abandoned polar bear cub on an ice floe. They know that he is Nanuq’s cub, the last polar bear, and gather him into their kayak to bring him home and care for him in the warming world."
Teaching Ideas: This book could be used in the Science Curriculum as the main focus is on Global Warming. A great introduction to kids about a intense topic.

Book Talk & Teaching plan
Both documents below indicate how I would use the books, The Beckoners by Carrie Mac and One by Kathryn Otoshi in a classroom environment:
