The debate whether or not to incorporate blogging into classroom is ongoing and both sides have valid points as to why or why not blogging is a good/bad and even necessary/must be avoided. After reading through the resources I would am leaning more towards a classroom that incorporates blogging. It has been said before that as future teachers, we cannot ignore the fact that technology will be present in our classrooms. Therefore, instead of fighting technology finding appropriate and effective ways to incorporate technology will be beneficial.
Blogging is a form of free writing that can encourage student creativity and allow for students to share their true feelings towards a specific topic or to just share their true feelings. As Michael Drennan mentions, "student blogging is powerful and stimulating and enriching" Although there are MANY benefits of student blogging the one that stands out the most to me is the ability to incorporate blogging into ALL aspects of teaching. Blogging may be used as both a formative and summative assessment and allows for student interaction with teachers through comments on the blog. Blogging can also be incorporated in presenting group projects and allowing students to put their questions as comments on a blog post that you as a teacher have posted. Not only is student blogging powerful for the student it will also be powerful, stimulating and enriching for teachers.
Yes, like with any technology, there has to be limitations as there are dangers to all aspects online. FOIP would have to be considered, cyber bullying would have to be avoided through monitoring and consequences and children who lack the technological skills to blog would have to be brought up to speed. Although there are downsides to blogging, most of these downsides have the ability to be regulated while still encouraging creativity.
After viewing the resources online I believe that blogging is beneficial to students as well as teachers and with regulation can be used as an effective tool in all aspects of the classroom.
