The following is a timeline I created that maps out Eliezer's journey as a young Jewish boy in Nazi Germany. Having a timeline allowed me to better understand the bigger picture, allowing me to focus on the specifics in greater detail. Timelines are a great tool to allow students to comprehend a story line or the order of important events within a text. I know for me personally I was often confused by the multitude of places and times mentioned within Night.
Timelines can also be beneficial for visual learners and kinesthetic learners. Allowing students to see a visual of the order of the events and the process of actually piecing together different scenes within a story would definitely hold merit for students who find themselves learning best in these modalities.
I personally am a very sequential learner and do not consider myself to be much of a kinesthetic learner. However, this timeline still helped me sequence the events and comprehend the text as a whole. Picking out the important aspects of each location or time of Eliezer's life also allowed me to evaluate what was important to me throughout the text. I mentioned times where he was still with his family, and when they were separated because I felt these to be huge turning points within the text. I also recognized when Eliezer became defined as a number rather than a human being to be one of the many influential scenes within the text. The images I chose to place are train tracks to represent the image of trains within the novel and how the Jewish people were treated like animals being transported and thrown off if they were not able to endure the harshest of punishments. I also put footprints to represent the horrific scene of being forced to run as fast as possible with fear of being shot or trampled from behind. Finally, I put the image of a cross and the Jewish star that Jewish people were forced to wear because Eliezer's identity is based upon his religion and the text largely focuses on Eliezer questioning his faith and wondering how his God would allow this to happen.
I think it would be beneficial for students to create timelines to further comprehension as well as incorporate visual literacy and a response that outlines the reason for choosing the images and methods they did in order to further connect with the text.
