Throughout The Book Thief the narrator (death) often focuses on the color of the sky, specifically during uncomfortable events. The image I made represents the three quotes that I feel represent the ability for the sky to take on a life of its own. The narrator often describes the sky, as I believe it is a reflection of what is going on in a particular scene. The colors of the sky often cast the mood of the scene and functions as imagery throughout. The narrator (death) describes the color of the sky when he is taking a life. Death is the sky stealer. While reading the novel I kept trying to piece together why the color of the sky was emphasized so much throughout the novel. It wasn't until I completed close readings on the sections that mentioned the colors of the sky that I started to construct my own meaning of the sky. Death seems to be using color to distract him from his taxing and stressful job. In the first scene he describes the sky as being white, which is usually a colour associate with innocence. During this time, Liesel's young brother dies. Colours are used as a distraction as well as imagery and to indicate that Death is not always black, it has the potential to see color and:
