Writing poetry is another great way to respond to a novel as a whole or specific parts of novels. I chose to write a Diamante poem that relates to both The Book Thief and Night by choosing a theme that relates to both texts. The idea of story and voice is prominent in both novels. While reading Night, I discovered a unique voice that is not often heard: the first-person perspective of a Jewish boy facing inhumanity. His story is told through through his childhood eyes which is unique and disturbing at the same time. While reading the text I constantly experienced feelings of shock and dismay. Night allowed Elie Wiesel to share his detailed, meaningful, heartbreaking. life-changing, inspiring perspective and voice with the world.
The Book Thief can also be deemed a powerful work of fiction relating to the importance of story-telling. Liesel realizes at a young age the importance of words. They are her connection to all things good and bad. She realizes there potential to destroy as well as the potential of words to do good. At the beginning of the novel she is unable to read or write which symbolizes her innocence and as she learns words she also realizes the great responsibility that comes along with knowing the meaning behind the words she learns. The diamante poem below encapsulates The Book Thief by reflecting the power of words. A story has the potential to change a life, stories are both heartbreaking and inspiring and significant enough to change the world.
