The context in which both of these novels took place is still relevant in the news to this date. On January 25, 2015 the world celebrated the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz. As a class it would be beneficial to look at the stories of the survivors through different means. One idea I had was looking at images of past and present Auschwitz survivors and writing a diary entry for both after studying grief and post traumatic stress disorder. This would enable students to see the effects of inhumanity and the confusion and anger felt by those kept in concentration camps. Realizing the effects of these actions 70 years later would be beneficial and could be discussed cross curricular as well. Below is one of the images from the link above.
