These are two collages I made in response to reading The Book Thief and Night.
Collages are a unique way to find out what stands out to be important themes or symbols to a reader. While I was creating my collage for The Book Thief I felt myself looking for words about books and reading and libraries: all important themes to me throughout the book. I also painted the background black and read to symbolize the Nazi Regimes impact on books and reading and the "freedom to read". I also chose different words that reminded me of both favourite scenes as well as favourite characters. For example. I chose the word "secret" because it reminded me of Max, and Liesel's ability to keep him as a secret. I also chose the word "teacher" because it reminded me of Hans Hubermann, Liesel's "papa" and his methods and influence on teaching Liesel to read a write.

For the collage I made for Night I chose to include a lot of dark images to represent not only the title of the book but also the experiences Eliezer endured. I also chose to include words that reminded me of Eliezer such as "brave", "Jewish" and "live to tell". I felt one of the main themes in Night to be survival and through the eyes of Eliezer we were able to see what it meant to live through and in "the darkest corner of the world".
Part of my literature circle and I all created collages. We had used the magazines found in the library recycling bin resulting in a lot of our images being the same. What was extremely interesting about this was all of our collages turned out complete different. A huge part of ELA is representation and collages are a unique and exciting way to do so. While it is interesting to see the diversity between three different individual's collages, it would be even more interesting to see what each individual in a class felt to be important or most significant to them. Each person represents the feelings and emotions they have differently and it is important to remember to honor each students representation.
